Kilimanjaro: Climbing Africa's Roof Without Ropes
Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free-standing mountain and the highest peak in Africa — and unlike most mountains of its stature, it requires no technical climbing skills, just determination and acclimatisation.
Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above the savannah of northern Tanzania, its snow-capped summit visible from 200 kilometres away on clear days. The mountain is a stratovolcano — the highest in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world — and its three volcanic cones (Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira) were formed by eruptions over the past million years. The summit, Uhuru Peak, is the highest point in Africa and one of the Seven Summits — the highest peaks on each of the seven continents — making Kilimanjaro a target for mountaineers from around the world.
The extraordinary feature of Kilimanjaro as a climbing objective is that it requires no technical mountaineering skills — no ropes, no crampons, no ice axes. The mountain is climbed by walking, albeit at extreme altitude, and the main challenge is acclimatisation rather than technical difficulty. The success rate for summit attempts varies between routes and between operators, but averages around 65 percent — the majority of those who fail do so because of altitude sickness rather than physical inability. The key to success is choosing a longer route that allows more time for acclimatisation and ascending slowly.
There are seven established routes up Kilimanjaro, each offering a different experience of the mountain. The Marangu Route — the 'Coca-Cola Route' — is the most popular and the only route with hut accommodation, but its relatively short duration (five days minimum) makes it the route with the lowest success rate. The Machame Route — the 'Whiskey Route' — is longer and more scenic, traversing the southern slopes of the mountain through rainforest, heath, and moorland before ascending to the crater rim. The Lemosho Route, approaching from the west, is the most scenic and the least crowded, and its eight-day duration gives the best acclimatisation profile.
The vegetation zones of Kilimanjaro are one of the mountain's most remarkable features — the climb passes through five distinct ecological zones, from the cultivated farmland at the base through montane rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone. The rainforest zone, between 1,800 and 2,800 metres, is home to colobus monkeys, elephants, and over 170 species of bird. The moorland zone, between 2,800 and 4,000 metres, is characterised by giant heather trees and the extraordinary giant groundsel and giant lobelia plants that are found only on the high mountains of East Africa.
The glaciers of Kilimanjaro have retreated dramatically over the past century — the ice fields that covered the summit in 1912 have lost over 85 percent of their area, and scientists predict that the remaining glaciers will disappear entirely within the next two decades. The retreat of the glaciers is one of the most visible consequences of climate change in Africa, and the sight of the shrinking ice fields from the crater rim — the Furtwängler Glacier, once a massive sheet of ice, now a remnant of its former self — is a powerful reminder of the scale of the environmental changes underway.
The Kilimanjaro National Park, which encompasses the mountain above 1,820 metres, is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority, and all climbers must be accompanied by a licensed guide. The park fees, guide fees, and porter fees make Kilimanjaro one of the more expensive trekking destinations in Africa, but the money supports the local economy of the Kilimanjaro region significantly. The porters — who carry the equipment and supplies for the climbing parties — are the backbone of the Kilimanjaro tourism industry, and choosing an operator that pays fair wages and treats its porters well is an important ethical consideration.
The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the two dry seasons: January to mid-March and June to October. The long dry season from June to October is the most popular, with the clearest skies and the most stable weather. The short dry season from January to mid-March is less crowded and offers the possibility of seeing the summit with a dusting of fresh snow. The wet seasons — the long rains from March to May and the short rains from November to December — bring cloud, rain, and snow that make the climb more challenging and the views less reliable, but the mountain is open year-round and some climbers prefer the solitude of the wet season.
